Judas Priest를 Heavy Metal의 제왕으로 등극시킨 시대의 걸작 "British Steel" 앨범이다. 70년대와 80년대의 메탈 음악에는 분명 커다란 차이가 있다. '헤비메탈'이란 말 자체는 70년대 초반에 나온 것이지만, 통상적으로 80년대에 접어들면서부터 비로소 정립이 되었다고 여겨진다. 블루스에 기반을 둔 하드락 시대의 영향력에서 완전히 벗어난 최초의 열혈 헤비메탈 앨범으로 평가되는 "British Steel"은 찬란한 헤비메탈 시대를 예고한 영원한 북극성과도 같은 작품으로 기억되었다. 본래 70년대 후반을 장식할뻔했지만, 마스터 테이프가 실종되는 우여곡절을 겪어 80년대 벽두를 화려하게 장식하게 되었다. 전형적인 8비트 메틀 넘버 "Breaking the Law", 이들의 닉네임이자 메틀 송가인 "Metal Gods" 등 '철'의 이미지만이 가득한, 메틀 스피릿의 시작이다. Trapeze 출신의 드러머 Dave Holland를 새로운 멤버로 맞이하였으며, "Ram It Down" 앨범까지 함께하게 된다.
