Slayer답지 않은 소프트해진 음악으로 세간의 우려를 자아냈던 전작 South Of Heaven 앨범에서 진보적인 업그레이드를 이루어내었다고 평가되는 밴드의 걸작앨범 Seasons In The Abyss이다. 전체적으로 음침하고 어두운 색채를 지니고 있는데, 보다 세련된 레코딩과 절제된 완급조절을 담은 구성력으로 이성적으로 걸러진 파괴미를 전해준다. 곡은 Jeff Hanneman과 Kerry King이 반반씩 작곡하였으며, Reign In Blood 앨범부터 함께해온 Rick Rubin의 지휘아래 제작되었다.
