폭군 Slayer는 1982년 LA에서 결성되었으며 83년에 데뷔작 Show No Mercy, 84년에는 미니앨범 Haunting The Chapel와 라이브앨범 Live Undead을 내놓았다. 본작은 Slayer의 두 번째 정규작 Hell Awaits 앨범으로 데뷔작에서의 Venom에게 영향받은 듯한 원초적인 사운드에서 한걸음 진일보한 내용물을 담고 있다. 사탄을 동경하는 주술적인 가사로 초창기 블랙메틀을 예기할 때 빠지지 않는 앨범이기도 하다. 3집 Reign In Blood 과 더불어 데쓰메틀의 초석을 다졌다.
