Formed as Necromantical Destructor in 1985, changed name to Hellsaw later that year and finally to Agathocles in 1987.
The band classifies their style of music as "mincecore". Jan Frederickx stated in an interview that mincecore is "the same as old school grindcore, the way it was in the 80's: raw, minimalistic and socially and politically involved".
